At UAntwerpen, gown use may be required or chosen by the faculty
Official UAntwerpen sources show two different doctoral practices. Medicine and Health Sciences documents jury use, while Applied Engineering provides for a prior choice.
One university, more than one arrangement
UAntwerpen illustrates how gown use can be organised differently within one institution. The available rules belong to particular faculties and to the public phase of a doctoral defence.
The university’s name alone is therefore insufficient for an order or booking. Faculty, role, type of defence and the latest instruction must be checked together.
Medicine and Health Sciences
The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences documents gown use by the jury and chair during the public defence. Within this procedure, it is an evidenced faculty practice rather than an assumption drawn from photographs.
The rule must not automatically be extended to the candidate, audience or every academic employee. An external jury member’s role, correct model, size and access to stock also need confirmation.
Applied Engineering: a choice affecting the full jury
In the documented Applied Engineering procedure, the candidate and chair decide in advance whether gowns will be worn. If they choose gowns, the entire jury wears them so that the defence is presented consistently.
This differs from a universal obligation: the choice comes first and produces a uniform result within that defence. It needs to be made early because quantities, sizes, booking and issue all depend on it.
Confirm the candidate, jury and gown wearers separately
A candidate may take part in the choice, planning or booking without personally wearing the jury gown. Organisational responsibility and individual entitlement should be recorded as separate facts.
The same applies to the supervisor, chair and external members: their functions are not interchangeable. A proper list identifies each person’s role and asks the faculty to confirm the associated model or loan route.
Faculty stock and booking
Official information confirms that gowns can be borrowed and booked from faculty stock. Institutional reuse is therefore established, but individual ownership and unlimited availability in every size are not.
A booking should include an issue list, size check, collection arrangement, return time and condition check. External members need extra attention because their home institution’s gown is not automatically appropriate at UAntwerpen.
The 2008 design in its proper context
An official heritage article describes the redesign of UAntwerpen’s gowns in 2008 and their relationship with faculty colours. It offers valuable institutional history and confirms that form and colour carry meaning.
Published in 2019, the article is not a current technical order sheet. Exact shades, fibre composition, pattern, lining, headwear and embroidery require fresh confirmation before production or restoration.
Deciding and planning without a market claim
The practical sequence is to obtain the current faculty rule, record the choice or obligation, list the wearers, check sizes and only then book stock or specify a shortfall. This prevents another university’s model being copied on appearance alone.
Numbers of jury members or defences describe wearing occasions, not annual sales. Useful stock variables are simultaneous demand, size distribution, reuse, condition and the exact number of missing pieces for a real ceremony.
