Becoming a lawyer in Belgium: oath, registration, traineeship and robe
The robe appears early in the professional route, but wearing it for the oath is not the same as completed bar registration or a mandatory personal purchase. Separating each step explains when the costume serves the ceremony and when an approved trainee lawyer receives ordinary professional rights.
The route begins with admission requirements
A prospective lawyer must first meet the applicable degree and admission requirements. A Belgian master's degree in law is the usual base; a foreign qualification may require recognition, equivalence or additional steps. The competent professional body assesses the individual file, so the title of a degree alone should never be used to promise automatic admission.
The candidate also arranges a supervising lawyer and prepares the file required by the bar where registration will be requested. Documents, deadlines and practical arrangements may vary locally. This administration should be checked before buying a robe, because the date of oath, the registration decision and the first hearing do not necessarily coincide.
The oath is a formal turning point
The oath forms part of the official professional route. OVB information states that the candidate wears a robe on that occasion. This special use needs careful interpretation: the correct costume must be available for the ceremony, but taking the oath alone does not complete the later registration on the list of trainee lawyers.
Arrange robe access well in advance. Ask the bar or supervising lawyer which components and logistics apply and whether a loan is available. A correctly specified borrowed robe may be entirely suitable for the occasion. The ceremony does not prove that every candidate purchases a personal robe immediately.
Registration activates ordinary professional rights
After the oath, the candidate applies to the competent local bar. In the route described by the OVB, approval of registration on the trainee list permits the person to use the title of lawyer, wear a robe and plead in court. The file therefore has a clear boundary between ceremonial use and approved professional status.
Record the registration decision separately from the oath date. The distinction supports office administration, insurance, training and garment management. Before a personal robe is provided, identify the competent bar, likely courts and local protocols. A generic black garment without confirmed components is not an adequate professional specification.
The bar traineeship lasts three years
Belgium's bar traineeship lasts three years and combines supervised practice with professional training and bar duties. The trainee is a lawyer, not a separate non-legal occupation. The detailed schedule, education and assessment operate within the applicable professional rules and local organisation.
The length does not reveal a national trainee population. Dividing all lawyers by three measures neither annual entry nor robe demand. Entry, interruption, departure, personal ownership and shared loan stock are separate variables, and no comparable current national sales series converts them into exact orders.
Trainee lawyers follow the statutory lawyer’s model
The Royal Decree of 30 September 1968 describes the lawyer's costume without creating a different robe for a trainee lawyer. The base remains the front-closing black wool robe with wide sleeves, pleated white rabat and epitoge on the left shoulder. The instrument also provides for an optional black wool toque.
Traineeship year, seniority or type of sitting does not automatically change that lawyer's model under the decree. Local practice can still provide a practical instruction, so the bar or court should be asked when doubt exists. An unverified colour or trim must not be marketed as a legally required ‘trainee version’.
From first loan to durable management
A correctly specified loan robe may solve the practical need for the oath or initial hearings. With regular practice, a personal robe can improve availability and fit; an office may also retain shared emergency stock. The decision depends on real use and ownership, not a supposed universal Belgian purchase event.
For a personal purchase, record role, statutory model, body measurements, clothing worn underneath and every component. For shared stock, add size class, wearer, issue, return, cleaning and repair. Recheck local protocol before the first appearance. Oath, registration and acquisition then remain properly documented as distinct events.
