Belgian robe accessories identify role and function
The wrong neckwear, shoulder piece, belt or headwear can turn an otherwise well-made robe into the wrong professional outfit. Every component needs its own approval.
Rabat and epitoge
The Belgian lawyer’s robe includes a white pleated rabat and a separate black wool epitoge, gathered at the centre and finished with white fur at both ends.
The epitoge sits on the left shoulder and hangs over the front and back. It should not be confused with a graduation stole or treated as optional styling.
Toque
Lawyers may wear the black wool toque described in the 1968 decree; the wording is permissive rather than a claim of mandatory use in every appearance.
For magistrates and clerks, material and braid can indicate court, office and ordinary or solemn use. A generic black cap is not an adequate specification.
Belts, neckwear, fur and lace
First-instance solemn dress adds a silk belt in Belgium’s national colours with red fringe. Appeal, assize and Cassation rules introduce white lace, coloured silk, gold or silver braid and specified fur details.
These elements must be associated with the exact office. They should not be sold, catalogued or replaced under broad ceremonial labels alone.
Academic headwear and stoles
Mortarboards, soft caps, bonnets and stoles may appear in Belgian ceremonies, but no universal national protocol covers every university and faculty.
Use only the institution’s current approved reference. A graduation accessory does not establish the design of a professor’s or rector’s dress.
Covers, labels and spares
A suitable cover supports storage and transport, while an internal label or stock ID supports return control. Institutions should keep spare detachable elements matched to the approved model.
Operational accessories can be standardised without standardising the robe identity itself.
Create a component register
Record each robe’s required and optional components, their item IDs, size where relevant, storage location and approved model version. For a lawyer, the rabat and epitoge should remain linked to the correct robe; for judicial dress, belt and toque must remain linked to office and occasion.
University stock should distinguish professor or jury components from student-event caps and stoles. A missing accessory is not solved by taking a similar-looking item from another faculty or institution.
Issue and return checklist
Before issue, check that the wearer and occasion match the component set, that attachments are secure and that headwear and belts fit safely. At return, count each item, note condition and separate anything requiring cleaning or repair.
Maintain approved spares for genuine high-risk items but do not create unapproved substitutes. A short issue record prevents small detachable pieces from disappearing into an undifferentiated store.
When an accessory is retired, retain its model reference or controlled measurements if the institution may need a future match. Disposal should not erase the evidence required to keep later batches consistent.
