Robe and gown fabrics and materials: what determines quality?

Wool, polyester or blended fibres are not a complete quality description. The right robe fabric suits the role-specific requirements, pattern, wearing duration, lining, frequency of use and maintenance.

The fibre name is only the start

Wear performance results from fibre composition, yarn, weave construction, fabric weight, finishing, lining, pattern and care. Togamaker.com therefore does not name a universally ‘best’ material.

Fibre

Wool, polyester, viscose and blended fibres have different properties, but the fibre name alone does not predict the complete garment.

Construction

Yarn, weave, density, finish and surface help determine drape, lustre, creasing, snagging and wear.

Pattern and lining

A well-chosen outer fabric can still become uncomfortable or unstable if the pattern, reinforcement or lining do not work together.

Care

Cleaning, heat, moisture, storage and repairability affect the fabric’s long-term performance.

The model first

For lawyers’ robes, article 28 requires, among other things, an entirely black robe of matt grein or a similar fabric, without panels. The decree states no general wool or polyester percentage.

Academic gowns and church or municipal robes may have their own institutional arrangements. Have a robe maker establish the applicable model first, and only then discuss material, lining and finishing.

Wool

Wool can absorb relatively large amounts of moisture from the surrounding air and has elastic properties. This does not prove that every wool robe or gown is automatically cooler, more durable or more comfortable. Construction, weight and lining remain decisive.

Polyester

As a fibre, polyester absorbs much less moisture and can be strong, shape-retaining and crease-resistant. Variants differ greatly, however; oil attraction, static charge and fabric construction deserve assessment.

Fibre blend

A blend can combine properties, but the percentage is not a quality score. Two fabrics with the same ratio can wear very differently because of different yarn, weave or finish.

Moisture absorption, air permeability and warmth are different concepts

ISO uses separate test methods for air permeability and thermal and water-vapour resistance. A fibre that absorbs more moisture is therefore not automatically the most air-permeable; a fibre that absorbs little moisture does not automatically make a robe or gown feel stuffy.

Fabric weight

Heavier fabric is not automatically better

Fabric weight is mass per square metre. On its own, it does not indicate how dense the weave is, how strong the yarns are, how the fabric drapes, how much it pills or how stable the colour remains.

Drape

Observe how the fabric moves in long panels, pleats and sleeves, not just how a small swatch lies flat on a table.

Surface

Check mattness or shine, snagging, pilling, friction and the visible face and reverse.

Complete construction

Assess weight alongside thickness, pattern, lining, shoulder load, warmth and duration of use.

Quotation check

How do you recognise a well-specified robe or gown fabric?

‘Premium wool’ or ‘crease-free polyester’ is insufficient without a measurable or verifiable specification.

Composition and origin

Request the full fibre composition in percentages, the fabric weight, width and a representative sample.

Wearing behaviour

Assess drape and freedom of movement in a trial garment and have outer fabric and lining specified separately.

Test where relevant

For larger commissions, data on wear, pilling, air permeability, colour fastness and cleaning may be more useful than marketing terms.

Repairability

Ask about seam allowance, availability of the same dye batch or spare fabric and the possibility of later repairs.

ISO 12947 covers Martindale abrasion, ISO 12945 pilling, ISO 9237:1995 air permeability and ISO 11092:2026 thermal and water-vapour resistance. These standards describe test methods; they do not automatically establish one universal minimum score for every robe or gown.

Customer-supplied material

Can you buy fabric yourself and have it made up?

This can only be sensible if the workshop accepts the fabric in writing before purchase. Do not buy solely on the basis of a photograph, colour or fibre name.

Have the technical details checked beforehand

Confirm the required metres at the actual fabric width, nap or pattern direction, dye batch, shrinkage or pretreatment and combination with reinforcement and lining.

Record responsibilities

Agree who bears the risk of shortages, errors, discolouration or damage, and what correction or guarantee applies when the customer supplies the fabric.

No universal number of metres

Design, size, width, pleats, sleeves and finishing together determine fabric consumption. Togamaker.com therefore does not specify a standard metreage.

Keep leftover material

A labelled piece of spare fabric from the same batch may be useful later for a minor repair or replacement of a component.
