Beadle’s gown and ceremonial official dress
At academic ceremonies, beadles wear their own institutional gown and carry an official staff; design, maintenance and replacement form part of the university’s ceremonial stock.
An inaugural lecture is an official occasion of use, but does not recur annually for each full professor. The Leiden protocol requires each newly appointed full professor to give an inaugural lecture; the intention is to do so within one year of appointment, wearing a Leiden gown and cap. A loan gown is possible. The Vrije Universiteit organises inaugural lectures and farewell addresses through Bureau Pedel and requires a gown and cap, with the speaker keeping the cap on during the address. No uniform public annual series of inaugural lectures for all 14 universities was found. Togamaker.com therefore does not directly convert the full professor count into the estimated number of annual enquiries for having a full professor’s gown or academic gown made. Not every full professor buys their own gown; loan gowns, university stock, second-hand use and maintenance influence actual demand.
There are personal full professors’ gowns, loan gowns, university stocks, second-hand gowns and gowns made available through the university or beadle’s office. It is therefore incorrect to state that every full professor immediately buys their own gown.
