Legal protection
A lawyer assists people seeking justice in proceedings and provides legal advice. The professional role focuses on legal protection and a fair process.
A source-supported overview of lawyers, firms, new entrants, local bars and legal aid practice. The figures are linked to admission, the courtroom and robe management without presenting them as sales figures.
NOvA measures different quantities at different times. That is why overall numbers, intake, training and firm structure are deliberately presented separately here.
A firm may have several offices. The NOvA figure of 5,494 must therefore not be read as an inventory of physical addresses or shops.
| Lawyers per firm | Firms in 2025 | Lawyers working in this category | Implications for robe organisation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 3,298 | 3,298 | Personal management is a natural option; a purchase is not assumed. |
| 2 | 788 | 1,576 | Personal and shared solutions can coexist. |
| 3–4 | 605 | 2,064 | Clearly identify ownership, size profile and storage for each robe. |
| 5–8 | 434 | 2,697 | Reservation and maintenance records become more relevant. |
| 9–16 | 213 | 2,448 | Onboarding and stock checks should have a designated owner. |
| 17–32 | 93 | 2,049 | Use inventory numbers, size ranges and inspection dates. |
| 33–64 | 42 | 1,923 | Centralise issue, return, cleaning and repair. |
| 65 or more | 21 | 2,991 | Treat shared robe stock as a professional facility. |
The public sources do not measure personal motivations through a survey. They do describe the protected title, social function and professional values of the profession.

Article 10a of the Advocatenwet lists independence, commitment to the client’s interests, expertise, integrity and confidentiality. The robe is not the source of these values, but makes the formal procedural role visible.
Taking the oath and entry on the roll officially make someone a lawyer. A robe without that legal status does not make anyone a lawyer.
In 2025, 1,182 new lawyers were sworn in. In the same year, 1,139 participants started the Beroepsopleiding Advocaten.
The regional distribution follows the local bar and court. Taking the oath is an official occasion on which a robe is worn.
This is an intake into training, not the total stock of active trainees.
The trainee lawyer combines practical experience with the two-year Beroepsopleiding Advocaten.
Practical experience includes appearing in court and drafting procedural documents; frequency of use may therefore vary by practice.
NOvA considers lawyers handling at least ten legal aid cases a year to make a significant contribution to the system.
This represented 23% of the bar and 462 fewer than at the end of 2019. Regional differences indicate the availability of subsidised legal aid. They must not be translated directly into robe purchases: lawyers can work outside their firm’s district and not every case results in a hearing requiring a robe.

Admission, hearings, new entrants, firm stock, fit, care and repairs are logical usage occasions to examine.
The main guide remains the central dossier on lawyers’ robes. These pages add the official professional structure, regional organisation, the oath and practical office management.
The official professional figures describe the size, intake and organisation of the legal profession. The estimated annual number of requests to have a lawyer’s robe made is presented separately in the main lawyer’s robe guide.
