Swearing-in and onboarding
New lawyers and trainees need early clarity on the model, size, availability and reservation arrangements.
An office robe is only usable if design, size, findability, hygiene and care are in order before admission or a hearing. This guide links official firm structure to a transparent management checklist.
Firm size alone does not determine whether shared management works; frequency of use, size range, availability and responsibility do.
New lawyers and trainees need early clarity on the model, size, availability and reservation arrangements.
A shared robe or gown can be practical, provided the design and fit have been checked beforehand.
A spare can cover unavailability caused by cleaning or repairs without assuming a sales figure.
For frequent use, personal bespoke tailoring can provide more control over fit, comfort and planning.
Three quarters of firms have one or two lawyers. Larger organisations have more potential wearers, but also their own policies, specialisms and working patterns.

Assign every robe or gown a unique number, ownership record, fixed storage location and status.
Record the wearer’s height, shoulder range, sleeve length, hem height and relevant fit notes.
Record who uses the robe, when it is due back and whether inspection is needed.
Record cleaning, stains, repairs, alterations and material care instructions.
The shoulder line, sleeves, overall length, hem height and freedom of movement determine whether a shared robe is safe and presentable to wear. Try the combination with the usual shoes and bands.

Follow the care label and specific advice for the outer fabric, lining and any finishing.
A loose hem, damaged button or small lining tear can be repaired sooner and with better planning than damage left unattended.
Assess thinned fabric, sheen, permanent discolouration, distortion, limited seam allowance and recurring repair costs.
The main guide remains the central dossier on lawyers’ robes. These pages add the official professional structure, regional organisation, the oath and practical office management.
The official professional figures describe the size, intake and organisation of the legal profession. The estimated annual number of requests to have a lawyer’s robe made is presented separately in the main lawyer’s robe guide.
