Gown entitlement expanded in 2025
All members of the PhD supervision team and the entire PhD committee may wear an academic gown at PhD ceremonies, including associate and assistant professors. This is not compulsory.

Since then, all members of the supervisory team and the entire PhD committee may wear academic gowns at PhD ceremonies; the university also describes its distinctive red academic gown.
This comparable count of full professors does not correspond to the group entitled to wear a gown at a PhD ceremony. Since 11 February 2025, gown entitlement has also covered the entire PhD supervisory team and committee, including associate and assistant professors.
Definition: regular and personal-chair full professors with a paid employment contract, counted as people, at the end of 2024, excluding the Health field. Outside PhD ceremonies, the right to wear a gown remains reserved for full professors according to the UM announcement.

A reliable gown order starts with the university, formal role and type of ceremony, followed only then by material, pattern and measurements.
Check whether the wearer belongs to the PhD supervisory team or PhD committee and whether the event is a PhD ceremony. Exercising the extended right to wear a gown is optional.
The confirmed colour makes a model recognisable, but does not establish the shade, material, cut, lining or differences between roles.
Walking ahead of the procession, handling the sceptre and remaining visible place different demands on freedom of movement and wear resistance than those of a seated committee member.
More participants being allowed to wear a gown does not prove that they buy a personal gown; availability, borrowing and local arrangements must be confirmed separately.
The heritage source confirms the red gown, but is not a complete technical pattern or colour specification for each academic role.
The announcement about expanded gown-wearing entitlement does not publish any borrowing, sizing or storage procedure.
Do not use old ceremony photographs as the sole basis for a current Maastricht gown.
