343 full professors in the national WOPI comparison

In Leiden, the public protocol makes an inaugural lecture compulsory for every new full professor; it is intended to take place within one year of appointment, in a Leiden gown and cap. Nevertheless, the total population does not equal the annual number of inaugural lectures or new gowns.

Definition: regular and personal-chair full professors with a paid employment contract, counted as people, at the end of 2024, excluding the Health field. Special-chair professors are not included in this population and are reported separately in the source. This sector source is separate from the number of gown sources in the introductory banner.

What the official sources show about Universiteit Leiden

Only explicitly published information is presented as fact. Non-public design details are not filled in with assumptions.

Black Leiden gown

The inaugural lecture protocol specifies a black Leiden gown with black lining and a black cap with a black interior.

Name and numbered storage

The gown and cap are customarily marked with the owner’s name. A personal gown can be stored permanently under an assigned number in the gown room.

Personal purchase or loan gown

The full professor is responsible for purchase and costs. Anyone who does not yet own a gown can reserve a loan gown for their inaugural lecture.

Extended entitlement to wear a gown

Since 2024, opponents and co-supervisors may also wear gowns and caps at doctoral defences; the doctoral candidate and paranymphs do not wear gowns there.

Rank, role and ceremony

Who wears what according to the public record?

The same person may be subject to a different dress rule depending on rank, role and ceremony.

From protocol to commission

What does this mean for a gown maker?

A reliable academic gown commission starts with the university, role and ceremony, followed by material, pattern and measurements.

01

Use current work instructions

A gown maker should not rely solely on photographs. The protocol recommends requesting current work instructions or information on experienced makers.

02

Check black components separately

The outer fabric, lining, cap and internal construction are individually described as black. Material, sheen and construction must not be guessed from this.

03

Include name marking and storage

Name marking and an assigned number are part of practical management. Placement and legibility must be agreed before delivery.

04

Borrowing is not bespoke tailoring

A loan gown can cover the ceremony, but it must be reserved in good time and checked for length, shoulders, sleeves and cap.

The public brochure provides many details, but does not replace current technical working instructions or an approved reference design.
