Personal gown, RUG loan gown or dark clothing
External full professors wear their own gown and cap. Without their own ensemble, they wear a RUG loan gown and cap or, if these are unavailable, sober black clothing.
Beadle and full professor differ
According to the RUG interview, the beadle’s gown has velvet on the sleeves and an embroidered university emblem; the full professor’s gown has buttons on the sleeves instead.
Storage and life cycle
Many personal gowns have a numbered place in faculty rooms. Reuse after donation, storage at home and professional summer cleaning coexist.

From protocol to commission
What does this mean for a gown maker?
A reliable academic gown commission starts with the university, role and ceremony, followed by material, pattern and measurements.
Role before pattern
A gown maker must first establish whether the order is for a full professor, rector or beadle. The Groningen example shows that visible sleeve and emblem details differ by role.
Record personal ownership
Name, number, storage location and ownership should be permanently recorded. This prevents mix-ups and makes maintenance and returns manageable.
New, borrowed or reused
A new gown is not the only option. The fit and condition of a donated or borrowed gown must be assessed separately and adjusted where needed.
Care as part of the commission
Cleaning, repairs, spare parts and accessory checks are part of the full life cycle of ceremonial official dress.
