This scale provides context for committee-wide gown-wearing rights and the limited stock of gowns and caps. Staff numbers do not reveal the size distribution or actual availability of loan gowns.

Definition: regular and personal-chair full professors with a paid employment contract, counted as people, at the end of 2024, excluding the Health field. What official sources show about Universiteit Twente

Only explicitly published information is presented as fact. Non-public design details are not filled in with assumptions.

Entire committee in gowns and caps

All members of the doctoral committee wear a gown and cap with a white shirt or blouse, dark trousers, skirt or dress and dark shoes.

External university

Committee members from another university are invited to wear their own university’s gown and cap.

Limited stock

Universiteit Twente also makes a limited number of gowns and academic caps available.

Cap during questioning

The speaking opponent puts on the cap and removes it after the answer; the other committee members sit without caps during the defence.

Role and ceremony

Who wears what according to the public record?

The protocol links gown and academic cap to formal membership of the doctoral committee and gives separate instructions for external members, examiners and the candidate.

From protocol to commission

What does this mean for a gown maker?

A reliable gown order starts with the university, formal committee role and ceremony, followed only then by material, pattern and measurements.

01

Confirm committee membership

Before commissioning, record whether the wearer is formally a member of the doctoral committee. Since 1 January 2026, the gown and cap rule applies to the entire committee.

02

Account for cap handling

The opponent puts on the cap while speaking and removes it after the answer. The headwear must therefore be stable and practical to handle.

03

Try on stock garments in good time

Limited university stock requires early reservation and checks of length, sleeves, shoulders and cap size.

04

Home university for external members

The outfit brought by an external committee member may differ from the local UT appearance and must be recorded together with the home university.

Transparent research limits

What cannot be inferred from the public source

Source limitation 1

The regulations contain no complete public Twente pattern or materials sheet.

Source limitation 2

Limited stock is not a sales figure and says nothing about annual replacement.

Source limitation 3

The dress code must be checked again against the current version and formal committee membership.
